1. Noises in the Attic or Walls (Especially at Night)
Roof rats are nocturnal and extremely active once the sun goes down. If you hear:
Scratching
Scurrying
Light running or tapping sounds
Movement in attic insulation
…there’s a strong chance you’re hearing these rats traveling between nesting and feeding areas.
They are lighter and faster than Norway rats, so their noises tend to be quicker and more delicate.
2. Roof Rats - Droppings With Pointed Ends
Roof rat droppings are one of the clearest signs of activity. Here’s what to look for:
Shape: Long and spindle-shaped with pointed ends
Size: About 1/2 inch
Location:
Attics
Rooflines
Cabinet tops
Behind appliances
Along exterior walls or fence lines
Fresh droppings are dark and soft. Older turn gray and hard/brittle.
3. Chewed Entry Points Along the Roofline
Because roof rats are climbers, they often enter homes through high areas:
Gaps in roof tiles
Open soffits
Damaged screens
Gutter gaps
AC chases
Vents or roof returns
Any small opening—about the size of a quarter—can allow a roof rat inside.
If you see gnaw marks, shredded insulation, or greasy rub marks, these are strong red flags.
4. Grease Marks Along Walls and Beams
Roof rats leave dark, oily tracks along the paths they travel regularly. These “rub marks” come from the oil on their fur and typically appear:
Along attic beams
Around roof returns
Near entry holes
On pipes, wiring, and conduits
If you see dark smudges in high places, roof rats may be active.
5. Damage to Fruit Trees or Outdoor Vegetation
Roof Rats earned the nickname “fruit rats” for a reason. They’re drawn to:
Mangoes
Citrus
Avocados
Bird feeders
Palm seeds
Half-eaten fruit, hollowed fruit left on the ground, or gnaw marks in gardens are common signs that these rats are nearby—and often nesting close to the home.
6. Nesting Material in Attics
These rats shred insulation, leaves, twigs, fabric, cardboard, and even attic duct insulation to build nests.
If you notice:
Piled shredded insulation
Soft nesting clusters
Chewed wiring nearby
…you may have an active nest
7. Pets Acting Unusual
Cats or dogs staring at walls, scratching at baseboards, or fixating on the attic access can indicate rodent activity. Pets often detect rodents long before homeowners do.
8. Seeing Roof Rats on Power Lines or Roofs
Roof rats commonly travel:
Across powerlines
Along fences
Across rooflines
Through tree branches touching the home
If you’ve spotted them in the yard, assume they’re exploring your home’s exterior as well.
Why You Should Act Quickly
Roof rats reproduce rapidly and can cause:
Electrical fires from chewed wiring
Damage to AC lines and insulation
Contamination from droppings
Odors from nests or dead rodents
Extensive attic and structural damage
Once inside, problems escalate fast.
